Your Hair Is My Canvas

Introducing David Lloyd, the owner of David’s Hair Design, located in Basildon Essex.

With over 30 years experience, David’s speciality is colouring ; he is, after all, a Master Colour Expert, so your hair truly is in capable hands. Working with the best in the business in South Africa, and highly skilled and trained, here is what David had to say for our ‘Face Off’ interview.

What brought you in to the world of hairdressing?
I would love to say I was interested in hair and fashion when I decided to go into hairdressing, but I wasn’t. I thought it would be an ‘easy’ job to do, but I soon learnt how difficult it was to cut hair. After about a week of working in a salon, as an Apprentice and going to College, my whole attitude changed. It’s hard to cut hair and it’s not just a job; it is a highly skilled trade and a huge passion must be within you for this profession.

What advice would you give to your younger self knowing what you do today?
Be more adventurous and specialise in colour earlier in my life.

What is the one piece of equipment you can’t live without in the salon?
Very simple…my hairdryer.

What is your must have hair product?
A great shine spray. Shiny hair looks and feels healthier.

What part of hairdressing do you love the most?
My love and passion is colour. The more technical and outrageous the better.

What has been the worst hair disaster you had to correct for a client?
I have seen so many hair disasters with clients doing their own hair! The one I remember the most, is a client who decided to highlight her own hair (this was in the cap days!). She used a plastic shopping bag and it split, so the bleach ran underneath the bag and she came out looking like an orange Dalmatian.

Who, or what, is the love of your life?
My wonderful partner, Peter.

What is your most favourite quote?
Live and let live.

Tell us your favourite artist or song that get’s you moving and shaking?
There are so many great artists but my favourite is Celine Dion. My get up and dance tune has to be Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?
America. I have been 3 times. San Francisco was amazing.

What is your idea of ‘home’?
Home is where the heart is.

What’s your favourite tipple after a long day?
I don’t drink alcohol, so at the end of the day, a nice strong brew is my ‘go to’ tipple.

Do you agree with the famous Coco Chanel quote….’a women who cuts her hair is about to change her life’?
Never heard that quote before.

With over 30 years experience, and being a master colour expert, what piece of advice would you give on how to look after your hair?
Use a good Shampoo and Conditioner. If you colour your hair, make sure you use a Shampoo and Conditioner specifically for colour treated hair. Do a deep treatment once a week and in the summer season, use a hair sun block.

How has the industry evolved to date since you first started out?
The industry has changed so much and things are so much more technical now. The products and colour techniques are so much more advanced, as is the training. Every year things change and become better and if someone had said 20 years ago ‘let’s just paint colour on the ends of hair’, they would have been laughed out of the salon. Now look at us.

Tell us why you adore your existing clients and what you would like to say to them now?
I have clients that have been with me for 20 years. I would like to thank them all, old and new, for their support, loyalty and friendship. I treasure your custom and your trust in me. Big kisses to you all.
