But is it art darling?

Art comes in many different forms and it can be very difficult to conceptualise what it means and how it is defined. So what is art and how do you even know if what you are choosing is ‘art’ and how do you interpret it all? It’s a minefield where there are countless categories for various forms. Sometimes when we are presented with something, we ask the question ”But is it art darling?”.

Art comes in many different forms; animation, calligraphy, sculpture, literature, movement, architecture, painting, photography, dance, graffiti and more. It is incredibly difficult to put art into one box and label it. This term can never be fully compartmentalised because it is something in the eye of the beholder.

If something moves you or speaks to your soul, then it should be classed as art. An Artist will look to share their expression, experiences and emotions through their pieces. As Greek philosopher Aristophanes, 4th Century BC, quoted ‘Let each man exercise the art he knows’. So you are free to portray your own vision, and if you wish, it can then be shared to others, for them to interpret and express their emotions.

Some of us don’t know our Art Nouvea’s from our Avante Garde, but that’s okay. There isn’t any snobbery when it comes to appreciating any art form. You don’t have to know the history of a particular era or the whole interpretation. The main thing is you are moved by something. If you are watching a silent dance performance, that depicts a famous screenplay, you can read the story visually and understand it and appreciate it. That is art to you.

It is a human creative skill, whether that be via auditory, performance, or technical ability and art is quite simply ‘something what we do’. Some find installation art a fantastic sensory experience, which allows their mind to wander into what it actually means and stands for and what the curator was trying to achieve and what inner feelings they were trying to convey to their audience.

Some find they appreciate the more classic type of art, the elegance and symmetry of paintings, or indeed more abstract art where they admire the spilling of paint randomly onto canvas and the spontaneity of the sweeping brush strokes or the drama and tension created with Baroque style pieces. From the decorative graphic arts and asymmetrical lines of the Nouvea era to the distortion and vividness of Expressionist art pieces. The sky is the limit.

You can appreciate whatever ‘type’ you like. It’s an endless opportunity as there is no set box to be opened for it to be classed as art. It is something where you can lose yourself or indeed find yourself, something that makes you think and feel and lets your imagination run free in a different world of escape. The creative process of something from start to finish, is a journey to be relished for the artist and an act of courage to then share this with the world. Without art forms, the world is a very grey place.

But is it art darling? The answer is, if it invoked an emotion within you, then yes, it is art darling.
