If you are looking for a nostalgic glow, there has never been a better time to break out favourite classic 80’s and 90’s shows to watch with the kids. With streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and the Disney+, getting hold of your favourite childhood episodes couldn’t be easier. If all else fails, head for YouTube, as there is bound to be episodes if not whole series of shows on there ready to be rediscovered.
Make it a Special Viewing Event
If you’re going to plough through old favourites and watch these things with your children make it a really fun activity for all. Crack out the popcorn and the candy “cigarette” sweets as well as your favourite nostalgic sweets and drinks before teaching the young ones what “proper” entertainment was all about. Before you know it you’ll have them all hooked on Trap Door and begging for another episode of The Raccoons.
Gummi Bears
This popped up on Disney+ very recently and yes, we did know all of the words still. We don’t know about you but we could really do with some of that Gummy Berry Juice right around now!
He-Man and She-Ra
She-Ra has actually been remade and you can find these new adventures on Netflix. We were prepared to hate them as few remakes measure up to the originals but we were pleasantly surprised. Make sure you all rewatch the classics first, before moving onto the new versions.
He-Man was the original hero for many and Skeletor was the ultimate villain. What we’d give to get another look at Grayskull and find out all of its secrets.
Thundercats
“Thundercats… Ho!” Such a brilliant cartoon. Great storylines, wonderful characters and the Sword of Omens was a must-have weapon for all at one point. This most definitely should be on your classic watchlist.
Knightmare
“Where am I?”, “You’re in a room….”. If you don’t recognise that you need to remind yourself. Teams of children guided their chosen brave adventurer through dungeons of floating skulls, through timed tasks and across disappearing tiled floors, where they were at great risk of their hero being lost forever. Sidestep your way online to find loads of these suspense-filled episodes. The kids will love them.
Dig a Little Deeper To Find Classic 80’s and 90’s Shows to Watch With The Kids
The further you go back the harder it is to get decent copies of old favourites. When it comes to the genius that is Button Moon (no CGI here folks!), the Herbs or Sooty and Sweep, you won’t be disappointed. We spotted these recently as part of very important research (playing back the theme tunes via YouTube). Don’t forget the Shoe People, The Magic Roundabout, Inspector Gadget, The Wuzzles, Care Bears, Teddy Ruxpin and of course, Rainbow.
What Were Your Favourites?
What was your favourite show when younger? Can you still remember the theme tune? Tell us what you consider the best show to come out of your childhood. We’d love to hear what your children’s reactions were to some of these. While you’re ploughing through your new watchlist we’ll be over here dancing to the Talespin and Duck Tales intros…..
